Fog - Aug 25th 2005
The fog is lifting fast. This photo was taken just 4 minutes after the previous image.
It is just two days away from our 40th wedding anniversary party. Jim arrived last night. We are in high gear getting the house ready for the guests. I think a great bash in an unfinished house is perfect. Definitely no worries about spilled wine on the carpet! We will have live music - a couple of groups. Looking forward to it.

Seiner
Fish boats will lay idle in Sointula. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announcement yesterday was a no go. Pretty devastating to communities up island who depend on fishing for income. Resentment and the rumours of a protest fishery are in the air. Seems it has been a banner year for sport fishing and First Nations food fisheries.
Jack and Linnea
Friends Jack and Linnea off Hermitage stopped by on their way back to Sidney. They sailed as far as Prince Rupert in this year's mediocre weather. They said only seven full days of sunshine shone on them with many overcast and rainy days comprising the rest. Jack said the rivers and fish will like the rain as we have previously had two dry summers.

Salmon Cleaning
Today, neighbour, Kathleen and I cleaned twelve salmon. Half were Sockeye and the other half Pinks. What a treat to be given free salmon just for being a resident of Sointula! We now each have our split salmon in the freezer save one which we will eat tomorrow evening in celebration of our good luck.

More of the always changing view from our cottage deck which is lower on the property than the new house. This photo contains a real range of boat sizes.

View of ferry approaching on this foggy morning. Hint: ferry is in the middle lower water area. ;-)

Victoria Legislature Buildings
Meanwhile, in Victoria, Jim and a team of professionals work on an inspection and a review of of the British Columbia Parliment buildings. I think he is really enjoying this!
Jim Travelling in High Places
The crane brings the inspection team in for a closer look at the dome's statue.
Mary Painting
As all good Tom Sawyers do, I was able to convince Friend, Mary "Finn" that painting the outside of a disgustingly stained trailer wall was a fun thing to do.
She and her husband, Lou are leaving tomorrow for more adventures on their boat, "Seventh Heaven".

Done Good!
The eyesore looking better with Mary's help. The last ten percent took all our will power to complete. We definitely got our gold stars today.
Fishing Net
This is a difficult year for fishermen here. Poor Sockeye returns have continued to postpone an opening here. Nets and boats lay idle.

8:30 am - Aug 11
Early morning fog obscures Haddington Island. Hope it clears up enough to be able to observe the Perseids meteor showers tonight. There are supposed to be more than one per minute visible after midnight.
Kevin
Friend Kevin talks to Darcy and checks out the new deck. Another friend, Bruce washed the windows clean of road, storage and construction dust. A few minutes before we were commenting on the ringneck pheasant just a short distance away from where you will notice the buck is grazing on the grass.
6:30 pm - Aug. 11
Another glorious day in Sointula. Neighbours to our west, Sylvia and Ray, arrived back home today and Neighbour, Kathleen arrived back from her summer work in Colorado. They will be surprised at the changes here.

Peggy & Kathleen at Bere Point
Looking for special treasure stones on the beach and watching for orcas and humpbacks is a worthy pastime.
Glacial Dump
Malcolm Island was formed by deposits left by Glacial retreat. This is a vertical section of the eroding cliff behind Bere Point beach.
Durdy Birds
Friends, Peggy and Mary pick out their favourite whimsical garden sculptures from the collection of Darcy and Kim Thompsen's Durdy Bird creations.
Pot Bellied Pig
Another contented resident of Sointula- a beloved family pet basking in the summer sun.

Jim, Bruce and Sailor
Sailor chews a tasty bit of two by four while Jim and Bruce check out the new windows and deck on the weekend.

Installing Header Beam
The beam over the windows was installed after the windows. It was definitely not the average window installation process.
Further Installations
This was a very tight squeeze. The beam is accurately notched and pushed and pounded into place. Tomorrow is the crew's last day.

Quick Trip
On Monday, Jim and I took Hayley, our granddaughter, back to Victoria. We had had a short but wonderful visit in Sointula. We took the 11 am ferry from Sointula and managed to return her home to her other Grandma's before bedtime. I stayed in Sidney for the night and after scrounging around for a few forgotten things, left in the morning driving friend, Kevin's pickup with his sixteen foot inflatable on a trailer. The trip was uneventful and the weather good so I was easily back in the ferry lineup for the 6:30 ferry to Sointula from Port McNeil.
As I was early for the ferry, I visited with Mary and Lou on Seventh Heaven. They are in Port McNeil installing a new windless after an unforgettable trip to the Haida Gwaii. Check out their blog. I have a link in the menus to the right. After a few days reprovisioning, resting and doing laundry, they will be off again with family guests as crew.
So today, I am back to overseeing and getting on with things here in Sointula. Jim is in Victoria ordering bolts and problem solving. He has meetings to attend, reports to write and somewhere find time to catch a few winks.

Hayley and her Rain Jacket
After a couple of hot sunny weeks, this rainy weekend came as a surprise. Our visiting grandaughter got a new rainjacket.
