Dec 17-07 11:24 am Sun- no Snow
What an amazing weather day this has been. Here, bright sun is casting bright shadows on the deck while just a few minutes ago it was snowing.
Dec 2-07 9 am Snow
Across the Broughton Strait snow now highlights the mountain on Vancouver Island above Port McNeill
Dec 2-07 7:41 am
It is cold and quite dark at 7:30 this morning. The snow line is at a very low elevation over on Vancouver Island. We, again, miss the heavy, overnight snow.
Nov 30-07 4:11 pm
The end of November finds Winter ahead. Looks like rain and cooler weather will prevail. Climate change seems to be affecting everyone globally but we seem to be escaping the worst. Sadly, much of the world is threatened by tragic and catastrophic events- many weather related. We all need to try to work toward a solution.
Nov 30-07 Quatse River Hatchery Tour
The Quatse River Hatchery stocks 15,000 steelhead smolts annually. Their facility, along with a beautiful regional park and campground is located off Byng Road near Port Hardy, BC. Tours are available.
Nov 25-07 Raven Overhead
Ravens are the largest members of the corvidae family which also includes crows, Magpies, Bluejays, Jackdaws, Rooks, Nutcrackers, and several others. They can grow to the size of a large hawk, and have a wingspan: 1.2 - 1.5 meters (about 50-60 inches).
When flying overhead, aside from the size difference, you can tell a Raven from a Crow by the Raven's wedge shaped tail as opposed to the Crow's more rounded shape.
On Malcolm Island, Ravens and Crows are often be found living side by side in the same areas. In more populated regions, where there's a choice, Ravens prefer wilder areas while crows will live quite close to urban development.

Nov 25-07 Alders on Winter Mode
The Red Alder is also known as Western Alder and is related to the Birch.
Alders are sturdy and very fast-growing, even in acidic and damaged sites such as logged and burned areas. Here in B.C, alder wood is traditionally used for smoking Pacific Salmon.

Nov 24-07 View from Deck of New House 3:40 pm
Our view from the deck of the new house is rather magnificent. Now just to get rid of the power lines...
Nov 17-07 Winterfest
I participated in my third Winterfest, Sointula's annual Christmas market and night of entertainment. Another electrical failure off island plunged the entire village into darkness in the middle of the performances. The hardy residents of Sointula patiently waited in the packed in the F.O. Hall until flashlights, lanterns and a portable boom box were found... and the show went on. A good time was had by all.
Nov 12-07 Result of Storm
The results of our first big storm- one of the boulevard trees by our neighbour's property came down and took out our electricity and telephone as well as their's.
Nov 10-07 8 am
I am very busy with Winterfest preparations and my photos off the deck have fallen off a bit. The sky even during rainy days is still beautiful and dramatic.
