July 24-09 Ship and Shore
Blue Herons and a ghost ship greeted me on this foggy morning on Kaleva Rd.
July 21-09 Petroglyphs Fort Rupert
Just below Port Hardy, Fort Rupert's beach contains several petroglyphs.
July 22-09 Saw Blade
The saw blade for the livingroom wall is made ready for lifting into a trailer and brought up to the upper driveway of our house. This "feature" will be lit from the back.
July 3-09 Salmon Berries
The salmonberry crop was magnificent this year. They were very sweet and juicy.
July 1-09 Sointula Forge_1
Here Dan fires up the forge's hearth using coal and hand cranked blower for a source of air. The air is forced into the middle of the fire through a tuyere which is simply a pipe. The hearth pan is not large but is capable of heating up pieces of steel to red hot colour in only a few seconds.
This forge was built only a few years ago. The original Kalevan Kansa Blacksmith Shop and Foundry was destroyed in a forest fire in 1925.

July 1-09 Anvil
Smithy Dan runs the Sointula forge up at the Halls on Sundays and sometimes on Wednesdays during the summer. There you can make a hook using a number of basic techniques all for the price of a optional donation to the museum. Dan is an excellent teacher and will also give onlookers a great lesson in the history and importance of the village smithy and forge. This is great destination while visiting Sointula.
June 20-09 Echo Bay
The Echo Bay community is across the Queen Charlotte Strait from Malcolm Island on the "Mainland". It is only accessible by boat or air. The residents are our neighbours and friends who must travel by boat or hike through trails to visit other residents. It is a beautiful setting and is very popular with visiting boaters in the summer.
One of the very popular activities takes place throughout the the summer months at the resort. Pierre's Pig Roast and various theme dinners bring large crowds out on Saturday nights. To take part in this convivial event reservations are a must. Contact the owners at Pierre's at Echo Bay: Pierre & Tove and Jerome & Lucy at info@pierresbay.com. More treats while visiting Echo Bay are visits to Billy's museum around the corner from the resort. Accessible by trail or boat, this is a must see. Bill Proctor has lived, fished, logged and scavenged this area his entire life. His collection of artifacts from bygone industries and First Nations habitation is amazing as is his storytelling. Try contacting Yvonne Maximchuk and her partner Albert for an inspiring tour of their idyllic studio/home/Art Retreat. www.searosestudio.net
Nearby, other tiny communities, made up of float houses offer more things to discover.

June 20-09 Chef and Pig
We enjoyed the pig roast at Pierre's. Here, Pierre himself is preparing the roasted pig for feasting.
June 19-09 Bill Proctor's Boat Shed
Billy Proctor, a well known fisherman, logger and environmentalist has lived in the area for his entire life. He is a fund of knowledge and it is really enjoyable to visit his museum which is filled with artifacts from the colourful history of surrounding islands and inlets on the mainland. Billy's museum is in Echo Bay, accessible by trail from the marina or just around the corner by boat.
June 19-09 Echo Bay Elementary
The Echo Bay School closed at the end of June 2008. It had existed since 1923 and was an important part of the community life of the whole area. Families could move to the region and have their children attend a local school. Mostly the students came by boat which by itself has left indelible and colourful memories for parents and students. The School is sadly missed. Sointula has benefitted from the closure as several new families moved here to boost the numbers attending A. J. Elliot Elementary.
June 19-09 Echo Bay Float Houses
Once a common site along the isolated islands along the British Columbia coast, these float houses are no longer full time residences but vacation homes and resort lodgings.
June 20-09 Sunken Tree
The crystal clear water and white midden beaches in the Burdwood Group of islands is a wonderful place to visit. Not much anchorage for larger boats but easily accessible by dinghy from Viner Sound or Echo Bay.
June 8-09 Crab n' Asparagus
Two kinds of asparagus garnish our fresh crab. On the right is Pacific Samphire commonly called "Sea Asparagus", which is found locally in tidal marshes. On the left market garden asparagus whose young shoots we indulge in during its season.
June 8-09 dinner on the deck
Friends Lou and Mary join us for dinner. Lou, better known as Crab Louie provided the crab we so enjoyed.
June 6-09 Oregano, lavender and chives
After a very cold winter and spring my deck pots of herbs are now greening up and promise good things to come.
June 6-09 Harriet
Harriet, one of our Durdy Birds, is now all spiffed up after a long winter in the elements.
June 1-09 Gikumi
The historic Gikumi, a well known whale watching boat out of Telegraph Cove, is up on the Tarkanen Marine Ways in Sointula.
June 1-09 Lost Shoe
Malcolm Island has a few unusual species of wildlife. Here, a rarely photographed feral shoe has added moss and lichen to camouflage itself.
May 10-09 Zorba at UVic
Jim and Zorba at the dog walking park at University of Victoria- a large fenced in area dedicated to dog walking, romping and socialization.
