Dec. 22-06
After a six month stay with us awaiting his work visa for the UK, Chris recieves the best Christmas present... it finally arrives, signed sealed and delivered. The festive Linda Sjoberg of the Sointula Post Office definitely added to the glad tidings
Dec. 21-06 John Livingston, Carver
Seen here in Calvin Hunt's shed, John is roughing out a pole which is part of a set of house poles commissioned for Stanford University.
Dec. 21-06 Stephen Hunt - Kwakwaka'wakw Carver
Stephen carving one of his magnificent paddles at the Coppermaker Workshop in Fort Rupert, B.C.
Dec. 21-06 Carver's Tools
A great collection of carver's adzes and knives at Calvin and Marie Hunt's "The Copper Maker" in Fort Rupert, B.C.
Dec. 7-06 Annie Tuck
After several busy days of making and sending off presents and generally tending to business, we hopped the ferry to Alert Bay. Our goal was to visit the U'Mista Cultural Centre for some Christmas shopping. On our way, I spotted an old friend tied to the dock, Annie Tuck, built for fishing the Bering Strait. She was one of the old sailing vessels. Last time we saw her, she had just been decommissioned as a fishboat but was being used as a fish buyer. She looked great and still had her masts and rigging. This view of her today does not do this boat justice. She was a beautiful and proud vessel and one that deserves recognition.

Nov. 30-06 Clearing up
Clearing the road Sointula style. Today all sorts of excavators, tractors and miscellaneous equipment have been doing their best to clear the roads. There is a fair bit of ice though and for those of us on hills and and valleys driving and walking will be quite hazardous for a few days.
Nov. 29-06 Blizzard
It is very cold, blowing and snowing. We are up at the house checking for any problems. We even have icicles. Sounds kinda pathetic doesn't it? What do we know about snow and ice? Herein lies the basic problem. The coast is basically unprepared for these conditions. I am very glad we are not down in Victoria or the mainland as we are beginning to hear about loss of electricity, blocked roads, traffic accidents and general chaos. So many people are having major problems without electricity.
Here it just howls and blows this white stuff every which way and keeps us endlessly occupied making sure we stay as prepared as possible.

Nov. 27 Cold Snap View
Batten down the hatches. Minus 10 Celsius is really cold for us here. We know the blizzard is on its way.
Nov. 26-06 Snow
An early snow has arrived. We have had days of unusually cold and generally miserable weather.
Nov. 23-06 Barge
For several months near our Sidney warehouse, a very large metal structure was being erected. We had no idea what it was but assumed it was for BC Ferries. We assumed incorrectly. On November 23rd we looked out our window in Sointula and saw the same object sitting on a barge in the water under tow with a large crane ship following behind. Turns out that it was going to the Orca Sand and Gravel plant located nearby just above Port McNeill on Vancouver Island. It was reported to be the largest mechanical device ever fabricated on Vancouver Island. It is one of those funny coincidences that this bulk gravel conveyor loader has now ended up here. We will not be able to see it daily but we know the monsterous contraption is nearby.
Winterfest Nov. 18-06
Sointula's 30th Annual Winterfest was a great success where wares and food were for sale during the day and an evening of entertainment rounded out the event. Residents, former residents, friends and family came very early just to get a good seat for the showcase of local talent.

Nov. 9-06 Auction Strategies
Secret signals and sneak bids are expertly made at the annual Seniors tea and auction. Tensions mount as prized articles come up. It is all very funky and great fun.
Nov. 7-06 Blending Tea
Chris and Joyce help make a blended spice tea in a commercial kitchen. Wild Island Foods Cafe is closed for the Winter except for special dinners but allowed us to rent the kitchen for an evening. Throughout Sointula, residents are creating all sorts of items to be sold at the 30th annual WinterFest event.
Nov. 2-06 Big Bite
Think this might be too big of a bite! But excavators on Malcolm Island show no fear. I think most Sointula men have one of these babies on their wish list of "gotta haves". Forget a sports car- this is the real deal and soooooo useful!
